Overview

The Singularity Is Nearer: When We Merge with AI (2024) is a book by Ray Kurzweil, an inventor and futurist, and a sequel to The Singularity Is Near (2005). Kurzweil argues that technological progress follows an accelerating exponential pattern, that machines will reach human-level intelligence around 2029, and that by about 2045 humans will merge with AI and expand their intelligence a millionfold, an event he calls the Singularity. He is optimistic about the benefits, including health and abundance, while acknowledging risks. The book matters as the most prominent statement of techno-optimism about AI, and as a target for sceptics who dispute its forecasts.

Context

Kurzweil has built speech and music technology and worked at Google. His 2005 book predicted that AI and biotechnology would transform humanity. By 2024, advances in deep learning and large language models made his forecasts more widely discussed, and this book revisits them with updated evidence and argues that earlier predictions have largely held up.
